I’m fortunate enough to currently have the means to go on nice vacations.  After the last 9 months of grinding, I have been doing that this week.  The last 3 months have been especially grueling as I work evenings and weekends on getting the startup going.

I took a week off work and went with my wife to Roatan, Honduras in celebration of our 20th wedding anniversary.  We’ve spent the week running around the island and doing as much as we can pack into a day before the sun goes down and we retreat to our hotel room to recover from the day and get ready for the next.  It’s been a great break to have my biggest worry of the day be things like, “I wonder if the dolphins are going to like me and will play with me?” or “I wonder if I’ll see more turtles in the water today?”

It’s also been great motivation for me.  I’d love to be able to do this more often, but worki

ng for someone else in a job that I have to be at every day doesn’t really lend itself to taking more trips.  As I’m coming to the end of my trip, I’ve started getting my mind ready to get back at it and increase my efforts on making progress and getting a viable product completed.

Time for yourself doesn’t have to be a week in some far-off location.  It might be an afternoon with your kids, or a Saturday at a carnival.  It depends on where you are and what’s available to you, as well as what’s important to you.  Whatever you do, it’s important to take a bit of time to do something for yourself every now and then.

Two more days in paradise – tomorrow we take another boat trip to one of the neighboring islands to look for whale sharks to swim with.  After that, it’s back to the grind at getting a startup off the ground!

  1. All so true! Sometimes we need a little reminder to take a break from the grind and appreciate what we grind for. Love that those were your biggest worries of the day, too! Wish that could always be the case!
